In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
